Choosing a resort: three things first

Below is what each resort is good at. Where you end up also depends on where you stay and how you like to ride.

1

Your current level

Every resort has green runs; level is just a guide to choosing your next mountain.

Beginner-friendly

Lots of green runs · first time
  • Hakuba Goryu
  • Tsugaike Kogen
  • Hakuba Norikura
  • Kashimayari
  • Jiigatake

Wide, gentle slopes at the base and lots of green runs — start here on your first trip.

Intermediate

Can turn · can stop
  • Hakuba47
  • Hakuba Iwatake
  • Hakuba Sanosaka

Once you can turn and stop on your own, try another mountain for new slopes.

Advanced

Long runs · steeps · powder
  • Hakuba Cortina
  • Hakuba Happo-one

Long runs, steeps and powder. Ride open areas only, and switch mountains when the weather turns.

2

What you want to work on

We look at five things in each resort, grouped into four ways to ride.

Powder & trees

  • Hakuba47
  • Tsugaike Kogen
  • Hakuba Cortina
  • Hakuba Norikura

Factor in how dense and how steep the trees are before you pick.

Natural terrain

  • Hakuba Iwatake
  • Hakuba Norikura
  • Hakuba Happo-one

Check the snow, your ability and what is officially open; visibility and a safe way out come first.

Groomed-run carving

  • Hakuba Goryu
  • Hakuba47
  • Hakuba Sanosaka

Find long, repeatable groomed runs and get the right feel underfoot on good corduroy.

Park

  • Hakuba47
  • Tsugaike Kogen

Start with features you can control and repeat, keep the risk low and build consistency.

3

Where you stay, how you travel

At the same level, a different way of travelling suits a different resort.

Adults · want to see a lot

A different mountain each day

Switch resorts every day and see the most of Hakuba. Between resorts, use the Hakuba Valley shuttle bus, Hakuba Demand Taxi, Uber or a hotel transfer.

Rather not travel

Stay by the slopes and ski out

Stay at a hotel by the slopes and head out in your boots in the morning. Cortina, for example, has a ski-in/ski-out hotel.

With kids

Stick to one mountain

Take lessons at Hakuba Goryu, where childcare and taxis are both at Escal Plaza. Keep a spare day so the kids can rest when they are tired.

Other resorts in the Hakuba Valley

How our coaches pick the mountain each morning

The same mountain is a different mountain in different weather. Every day we decide in this order:

  1. Check the weather and lift status
  2. Confirm your level and what you want to work on
  3. Look at crowds, wind and snow
  4. Decide the main plan, and a backup
